Comparing Job Ads

Before you begin:

Students need to know how to use want ads.

Objectives:

1. Students will be able to use the Internet and e-mail at the public library.

2. Students will compare housing using two resources, the Internet and newspaper ads.

Introduction:

What are things wwe are always looking for? cars, food, housing, jobs.

How do we find these things? Friends, newspapers, unemployment office.

How many of you have used the Internet?

Where do we have the computers in our school?

Have you noticed computers in the public library?

Did you know that anyone can use them?

How can you get access to these computers?

Requirements:

No Computers needed

Presentation

Let's say you need to find an apartment. What do you want to look for? Number of bedrooms, etc. Students will generate secifics. Teacher can write some of these on the board. Put them in groups and have each one decide what they want. Give students a handout with step-by-step instructions for how to look up information on housing rentals and web address http://www.apartementguide.com. Students can print it and bring it back to school.

Practice

At school they will compare the information they found in the newspaper and the information on the internet. One person from each group should report on their findings. Have them address the issue of which way is the best way. As a follow-up, have them use a search engine to find something on the Internet.
