This lesson is designed for Beginning Level classes, but it can be expanded for higher levels.
Before you begin:
The teacher should preview the websites
the students will be using to find any vocabulary needed, and to ensure that
the site is still there. Make a list of preview vocabulary, such as: 1. Destination
2. Intersection
3. Exit
4. Approximately
5. Continue
6. Turn (left/right)
7. Take (left/right)
8. East, West, North, South
9. Get on/off
10. Onramp/Offramp
11. "You can't miss it!"
Introduction
1. Explain project to students.
2. Introduce new vocabulary.
3. Provide address of starting point.
4. Provide a list of necessary websites

- Yahoo Maps (http://maps.yahoo.com)
- Mapquest (http://www.mapquest.com)
Sample activity: "Tour Guide" Description: students use MAPBLAST(http://www.mapblast.com) or Yahoo (http://maps.yahoo.com)to find information on points of interest, weekend activities, restaurants, historical sites,places for entertainment, etc. Students gather info from different locales and work together (in pairs) to present to the class.
Presentation
Students will find the location of their school on mapblast.com (e.g., Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga). The teacher will guide students in creating directions to the Ontario Mills shopping center as an example of what to do
Practice
1. Students will break into groups based on ability levels and find directions from the starting point to other locations: Disneyland, Ontario Airport, and the California Speedway at Fontana.
2. Each group will describe how to get to their destination.
3. Emphasis will be placed on use of new vocabulary.
4. Students will either draw a map or write out the directions.
5. Groups will come together as a class and share what they found.
